America's Camp Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the fundraising and governance vehicle for America's Camp. The camp and the foundation were created to provide a free, high quality, fun and supportive summer camp experience for children who lost a parent or sibling in the attacks on September 11th - in New York City, Washington, D.C., or on one of the airplanes involved in the attacks. The foundation soon expanded its commitment to include children and siblings of firefighters or law enforcement officers lost in the line of duty at any time.
The foundation is a legacy program of the Twin Towers Fund. The TTF supported and recognized the families of the members of the uniformed services and other government offices who lost their lives or were injured during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on 9/11. The Fund completed its mission in 2003, having raised and distributed over $216 million. The TTF was chaired by Rudolph Giuliani and presided over by Laurence Levy, former Deputy Counsel to Mayor Giuliani and the current Chairman of the America's Camp Foundation. America's Camp Foundation was launched with legacy funding from the TTF, including generous gifts from The Britney Spears Foundation and AmeriCares.
The number of participating boys and girls has grown steadily since the first America's Camp session, from 79 campers in 2002 to 132 in 2003, 185 in 2004, and 210 in 2005. Over 80 percent of our 2005 campers were returning campers. The America's Camp Foundation Board of Directors is committed to raising sufficient funds to allow the camp to continue operations until 2018, when the last of the 9/11 children will have "graduated" from Camp.
